Resumen

Harriet Martineau (1802-1876). Primera socióloga y primera metodóloga social. Visitó Esta­dos Unidos y como resultado escribió Society in America en 1837, y en 1838, Cómo observar la moral y las costumbres [How to Observe Moral and Manners]. En ambas obras introdujo perspectivas sociológicas feministas y antirracistas y aborda temas como el matrimonio, los hijos, la vida doméstica o la vida religiosa. Estableció la metodología de investigación social al crear y aplicar pautas para pasar de la filosofía social a la investigación empírica. Tradujo al inglés la obra de Comte y la “mejoró” tanto que él recomendó leer la versión de Martineau en lugar de la original. Divulgó las teorías económicas de los clásicos de forma clara y senci­lla. Una de las pocas mujeres capaces de vivir (y sostener a su madre) con sus publicaciones. Pero el androcentrismo generalizado de las ciencias ha invisibilizado sus obras hasta fechas recientes.

Abstract

Harriet Martineau (1802-1876). First sociologist and first social methodologist. She visited the United States and as a result she wrote Society in America in 1837, and in 1838, How to Observe Morals and Manners. In both, she introduced feminist and anti-racist sociological perspectives and address topics such as marriage, children, domestic life, or religious life. She established the methodology of social research by creating and applying guidelines to move from social philosophy to empirical research. She translated Comte’s work into English and “improved” it so much that he recommended reading Martineau’s version instead of his origi­nal. She disseminated the economic theories of the classics in a clear and simple way. Martin­eau is one of the few women capable of living (and supporting her mother) with her publica­tions. But the generalized androcentrism of the sciences has made her works invisible until recently.
