LA ALTERNATIVA REPUBLICANA A LA DEMOCRACIA CONTEMPORÁNEA: PARTICIPACIÓN Y VIRTUD CÍVICA

Resumen

En las páginas que siguen, tras denunciar algunas de las carencias del modelo liberal de democracia, se analizan las propuestas que se hacen desde el republicanismo cívico para superarlas y para mejorar la vida pública, entre las que destaca su apuesta por una participación política intensa y reflexiva. Se ofrecen, asimismo, argumentos para rebatir dos de las críticas más recurrentes al republicanismo: que es una doctrina potencialmente opresiva y que la virtud cívica que requiere su puesta en práctica es imposible en nuestros días; en este sentido, se arguye que nada impediría a los ciudadanos cumplir sus obligaciones cívicas si se les brindaran las oportunidades, los recursos y la motivación oportunos.

Abstract

This paper exposes some of the faults of the liberal conception of democracya and examines the suggestions made by civic republicanism to overcome them as well as to improve the public life; among these, one of the most outstanding is the proposal of an intense and reflesive political participation. Moreover, the author contests two of the most widespread critics against republicanism; namely, its being a potentially oppresive ideology and the fact that civic virtue required for its implementation is impossible nowadays. With regard to the latter, it is argued that citizens would fulfil their civic duties if they were provided with the appropriate chaces, resources and motivation.
