The origins of uncertainty: Approach from a french perspective

Resumen

Este artículo analiza los orígenes de la incertitud creciente que afecta a las sociedades contemporáneas desde una perspectiva esencialmente francesa. Esta incertidumbre se refleja por la multiplicación de acontecimientos imprevistos que tienen efectos notables a medio plazo, y, sobre todo, por la intensificación y diversificación de la incertidumbre, fuente de riesgos y de inseguridades, especialmente en el ámbito social, que tienen cierta incidencia en el auge de fenómenos contemporáneos, tales como el presentismo, el conspiracionismo, el populismo o el fundamentalismo. Avanzamos la hipótesis según la cual esta incertidumbre, que va en aumento, resulta, en gran parte, del fin de los grandes relatos, de la aceleración de los cambios y de la fragmentación del cuerpo social, lo que provoca, a su vez, la ausencia de un horizonte deseable e ineludible une menor determinación de los comportamientos, un tiempo limitado para adaptarse al cambio y una vulnerabilidad creciente ante los acontecimientos imprevistos.

Abstract

This article analyses the origins of the growing uncertainty affecting contemporary societies, essentially from a French perspective. This uncertainty is reflected in the multiplication of unforeseen events with significant effects in the medium term, and above all in the intensification and diversification of uncertainty, which are sources of risks and insecurities, particularly at the social level, and which have an impact on the rise of current phenomena such as presentism, conspiracy, populism, or fundamentalism. We suggest the hypothesis that this growing uncertainty is largely the result of the end of grand narratives, the acceleration of ongoing change and the fragmentation of the society, which, in turn, results in the absence of a desirable and inescapable horizon, a less determined behaviour, limited time to adapt to change and an increasing vulnerability to unforeseen events.
