Compulsive use of the Internet and substances
among Spanish adolescents

RESUMEN

En el presente artículo se presenta un análisis de la encuesta ESTUDES 2016 centrado en el uso compulsivo de internet a través de la escala CIUS, recientemente incorporada por el Plan Nacional sobre Drogas en su programa estadístico. Se han analizado los adolescentes españoles agrupados en dos submuestras, aquellos que presentan uso compulsivo de Internet y los que no presentan dicho uso. La hipótesis general que ha guiado el análisis ha sido que los adolescentes con uso compulsivo tienen una mayor probabilidad de consumir alcohol, cigarrillos, cannabis y nuevas sustancias, así como también presentan mayores prevalencias respecto de las modalidades de consumo como la borrachera, el botellón y el «binge drinking». Los resultados confirman estas intuiciones, pero señalan también cómo el sexo y la edad juegan un papel ambivalente en dichas asociaciones.

ABSTRACT

This article presents an analysis of the ESTUDES 2016 survey focused on the compulsive use of the Internet through the CIUS scale, recently incorporated by the National Plan on Drugs in its statistical program. We have analysed the Spanish teenagers grouped in two subsamples, those who have compulsive use of the Internet and those who do not. The general hypothesis that has guided the analysis has been that teenagers with compulsive use are more likely to consume alcohol, tobacco, cannabis and new substances, as well as being more prevalent with regard to consumption patterns such as drinking, binge drinking and «botellón». The results confirm these hypotheses, but also indicate how sex and age play an ambivalent role in these associations.
