Abstract
Feminist macroeconomics has long highlighted how gender roles shape both productive and reproductive processes. In this regard, one of the most persistent and significant forms of gender inequality in the productive sphere is reflected in the gender employment gap. Using data from the Spanish Labour Force and Eurostat, we decompose this gap into its different components in order to analyse the macroeconomic effects of closing it without reducing men’s wage bill. To do so, we estimate a feminist post-Kaleckian model that incorporates the role of income distribution in shaping the behaviour of the components of aggregate demand. The results point to positive effects on the various components of aggregate demand arising from advances in gender equality.
