Resumen: El estudio de la innovación en el sector servicios ha generado una creciente literatura que destaca sus especificidades con relación a la innovación en el sector industrial. En este artículo intentamos acotar el alcance de esas especificidades al tiempo que examinamos la heterogeneidad de las actividades de innovación entre las diversas ramas del sector servicios. Este trabajo discute críticamente la reciente literatura en este campo y realiza un estudio empírico sobre la experiencia española con base en la información estadística disponible (Community Innovation Survey-CIS5 y Panel de Innovación Tecnológica-PITEC). Los resultados parecen mostrar que las diferencias no están tanto entre la industria y los servicios como un todo, sino entre las diferentes ramas de actividad –centrándonos en este caso en las terciarias– como consecuencia de sus diversas características estructurales.

Abstract. The study of innovation in the service sector has generated a growing literature that highlights its specificities in comparison to the innovation in manufactures. In this article we strive to delimit the scope of these specificities while we examine the heterogeneity of innovation among different branches of the service sector. This paper discusses critically the recent literature in this field and performs an empirical study on the Spanish experience based on available statistical information (Community Innovation Survey-CIS5 and Technological Innovation Panel-PITEC). The results seem to show that there are not so many differences between manufactures and services, if we take the sector average into account. On the other hand, remarkable dissimilarities are found between branches – in this case focusing on the service sector – because of their different structural characteristics.
