Resumen: Este trabajo analiza el proceso inversor de las empresas españolas en el exterior, valorando su importancia cuantitativa, la intensidad que ha alcanzado en los últimos años y su distribución por sectores de actividad y áreas geográficas de localización. Además, estima otro aspecto clave: su rentabilidad, evaluando el impacto que sobre ella han tenido los cambios en esas distribuciones, y la posible relevancia de algunos otros factores. Se destaca la considerable expansión de las inversiones exteriores en los últimos años, su creciente orientación hacia países desarrollados, con mercados más competitivos y exigentes, y las elevadas cifras de rentabilidad obtenidas. Todos estos aspectos son indicativos de la solidez del patrón productivo español.

Abstract. This paper studies the investment process of Spanish companies abroad, assessing its quantitative importance, the intensity it has reached in recent years, and their distribution by sector and geographic location. It also analyzes the key aspect of its rates of return, estimating the impact on them from changes in such distributions along the time, and discussing the possible relevance of other factors. It highlights the considerable expansion of foreign investment in recent years, their increasing orientation towards developed countries, with more competitive and demanding markets, and the high levels of return reached. All these aspects are indicative of the strength of the Spanish production pattern.
